Rivers of Light Project Officer

Newmarket Chalk Stream Trust

Are you as excited as we are by the prospect of creating a restored and freely flowing chalk
stream that is a green corridor and a powerful focus for our community?

Following a National Lottery award, Newmarket Chalk Stream Trust CIC needs a
PROJECT OFFICER to help develop the “Rivers of Light-Secret Chalk
Streams”
initiative. This means improving our chalk streams’ wildlife, landscape and
diversity and raising awareness in the community. We want our chalk stream to be a source of
pride and enjoyment for the people of Newmarket.

So this job provides a unique opportunity to participate in the improvement of a vanishingly
rare habitat and development of a strong community arts and education involvement. The task
will require the coordination of landowners, businesses, stables, government agencies, local
authorities, schools, universities, communities and a plethora of interest groups.

  • 3 year full-time self-employed contract, 5 days a week
  • 40 hours flexible, working from home.
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Reporting to the Board of Trustees

Person profile:

  • You must have an understanding of water and chalk stream ecology and management, and
experience of working with water systems/environments.
  • You will be able to self-organise and work both independently and collaboratively with diverse
    stakeholders.
  • You will need to be a graduate equivalent or higher in a relevant subject but experience is
    equally important.
  • Living in or near Newmarket, Cambridge or the surrounding areas, or be able to regularly and
    easily visit them.

Closing date 23rd August 2025
