Schools Lead

Mums for Lungs

OVERVIEW

Mums for Lungs CIC is an organisation of people campaigning for cleaner air to safeguard the health of children across the UK. Founded in 2017 in Brixton, London, in response to the toxic
levels of pollution locally, we have since expanded to become a network campaigning for clean
air across the UK.

We are hiring an energetic, creative and community-focused School Lead to continue our
impactful work on School Streets in Lambeth and Southwark in London, and across the country.

To date, our schools work has included working with parent groups to get School Streets
effectively implemented, developing resources to raise awareness of School Streets, presenting
school assemblies to every age group, creating collaborations between schools and scientific institutions exploring the impact and effects of air pollution, organising School
Street celebration events, placing tens of thousands of flyers in school book bags, working
with councillors and officers to connect and support them, and more!

SUMMARY OF THE
ROLE

As the Schools Lead, you will play a pivotal role in raising awareness across school
communities and in mobilising individuals and groups to campaign for changes around schools
that reduce air pollution and improve children’s health.

You will develop, implement and run our School Streets programme and school engagement projects
(including delivering assemblies in schools), building on the strong foundations and
relationships we have built over the past few years.

You will work in and within school communities, building partnerships and creating networks
with parents/carers, teachers, schools and councils. You will develop deep insight into the
campaign for and delivery of School Streets across the country and support parents/carers,
school leadership teams and council officers with their mobilisation and rollout.

Working with the team members, you will develop media stories and communications plans to
increase the support for air pollution and, in particular, School Streets action.

Lastly, we all jump in when needed, we are a small team and are flexible with regards to doing
whatever is needed.

You will be supported by a small team in London and Greater Manchester.

SKILLS

You are:

  • A people-person! You enjoy meeting people, inspiring and connecting them to others, and
building relationships from all walks of life, from young pupils to council leaders.
  • A self-starter who can motivate yourself; excited about engaging school communities, you have ideas on where to meet the right people. You know how to manage group
dynamics and are keen to pass this knowledge on.
  • A team player with leadership skills.
  • A strategic thinker who can develop and think through a comprehensive action plan in an
ever-changing context. You seize opportunities where they arise!
  • Reliable, whether in relationships or the delivery of an action plan.
  • Enthusiastic and non-judgmental, with a passion for campaigning for children’s health and
clean air and an ability to infect others with it. You don’t need to know about air pollution
or the political context – but you must be willing to learn.
  • An excellent written and spoken communicator, and confident and proactive about doing so, whether with potential volunteers, in meetings with political officials or with the
    media.
  • Someone with a good eye for detail.
  • Willing to travel for work purposes. You are flexible and ready to work in the evening when
    necessary.
