Foulney Island Seasonal Warden

Cumbria Wildlife Trust

Foulney Island Seasonal Warden

Salary: NLW £12.21 per hour for 35 hours per week, plus paid holidays and pension contributions

Contract: Temporary post for approx. 16 weeks

We are seeking to appoint a Seasonal Warden for Foulney Island, an important tern and seabird colony near Barrow-in-Furness.

We are looking for someone who has great communication skills and good knowledge of British coastal birds, along with experience in species monitoring and surveying.

This exciting role will see you responsible for one of the most important tern nesting colonies in the North West. Responsibilities of the post include monitoring breeding terns, waders and ducks, carrying out nest protection duties, and producing an end-of-season report. Good communication skills and knowledge of coastal birds are therefore essential. Previous experience as a warden is desirable but not essential.

Foulney Island is a remote site; therefore, the post holder is required to act in a self-reliant and independent way. The post will be supported by the Southern Reserves Officer, who is based at the nearby South Walney Nature Reserve. The post holder will also work alongside the South Walney Seasonal Warden as well as volunteers.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Survey and monitoring
  • Nest protection
  • Visitor management
  • Reporting
  • Liaising with the Local Community and Volunteers
  • Assisting the other Wardens and Reserves Officer with the overall management of the site

The contract will start on 6 April 2026 and run for approximately 16 weeks until 26 July 2026, depending on the breeding season.

Accommodation is included and provided on-site.
